about
Sumbry continues the Djembe Kan to introduce D. Gardner’s arrangement of Jackie McLean’s composition Appointment in Ghana. The arrangement of the trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, and djembe beckon the listener to prepare themselves. As the rhythm section lays down a solid groove for the horns, one can envision folks making their way to congregate in anticipation. Vincent Gardner, and Rob Dixon then initiate a punctuated, up-tempo call to which D. Gardner responds, and the journey begins.
D. Gardner, Dixon, and V. Gardner all blow blistering solos. After V. Gardner’s offering, Sumbry briefly takes the reins with a tasteful eight-measure break that ushers in a scorching soli section (trumpet, sax, and trombone). This powerful segment punctuates each soloist’s statement about what happened in Ghana. With Appointment in Ghana, the band establishes a tone that makes the listener yearn for what is to come.

An incredibly rich record, where jazz gets mixed with a lot of other sounds influences, like classical music and hip-hop. It is also very accessible yet superberly played. It's a really great piece of musical work. Thibaut Devigne
